An Old Man and His Dog

Years ago, I taught Sunday School to young children. Often, to settle them down, it was just easier to tell them a story. Through at first, the children would fidget through it, they would (hopefully) get caught up in the lesson that stories of this kind have to teach.

I'm inspired to re-tell this tonight, learning that a friend of mine was caring for a stray cat, one of God's innocents, and that cat has now tragically passed away.

                                               ~~~~~~~~~
There was an old man who met with a horrible accident, he and his dog. They were both killed instantly, painlessly, and departed their earthly confines for Paradise.
When they arrived in the hereafter, it was not at all what they expected. They were standing on a narrow dirt path. The place was deserted; it seemed an undeveloped wasteland.
The man looked all around and saw a sign that said, "Heaven, this way." So, he set out on his journey to his heavenly reward, his faithful dog running alongside him.
They walked for what seemed to be hours, and were getting tired, when they came upon the sight of Heaven. The gilded gates gleamed with gold, inlaid with precious gemstones. The street that was set forth beyond it also golden, shiny. There were large mansions, gleaming white.
He knew he had reached his destination, and he was elated.
He approached a large alabaster podium. A man was standing behind it, with long, flowing white hair and a pristine white robe. The old man assumed him to be St. Peter. He was paging through a massive book.
The old man nervously cleared his throat and asked, "St. Peter, I have come, having served The Lord all my life. Please, is my name in the book?"
St. Peter leafed through the book briefly and then replied, "Ah, yes, you are here. But just you. Dogs are not allowed in Heaven."
The old man turned around and looked down at his faithful friend. His dog was a friend to the end and beyond. He was saddened that his friend would not be welcome in the Kingdom of Heaven.
He turned back to St. Peter and with a groan, pleaded, "Please sir, let me take my dog. He won't be any trouble."
"Sorry, Heaven has no room for dogs."
"I can't leave my friend," the old man replied. "He's been a better friend to me that any person could be."
"Well, maybe you better try the lesser Heaven down the road. It's not as nice as this place, though. You might want to reconsider your decision."
Sadly, the old man walked away from the podium and his little dog followed, as the exhausted duo headed further up the road.
They stumbled along for a few minutes until they came to a large, gated meadow. There were several cabins on the property, simple but sturdy structures. There was a handmade fence made of natural wood posts, with a gate that looked like it would fall apart with the first gust of wind. A young man was sitting on the fence, clothed in overalls, chewing on a piece of hay, watching them as they approached.
The man looked around to see if this was all there was, and saw a well. He looked back at the young man on the fence and asked, "Can me and my dog have some of the water in the well?"
"Sure, help yourselves," the young man replied.
The old man dropped the bucket and drew out water. He found a small pan sitting next to the well and filled it with the water and placed it in front of his little dog, who lapped at the water eagerly. He dropped the bucket back into the well, and drew it out again and drank his fill.
Wiping his face on the back of his sleeve, he asked, "Am I welcome here? Me and my dog?"
"Yes, you may pass through. Find a cabin. Stay."
The old man and his dog went through the rickety old gate and the place transformed to a Heaven more pristine than the first one he saw. He looked at the young man who was now floating above his head, wearing a robe that shined as bright as the sun.
In awe, the old man asked,"Is this Heaven?"
"Yes, this is Heaven. The true Heaven, where we don't leave our friends behind. The first one was a decoy, and is actually the gates of Hell. If one is willing to leave a friend behind, they can earn nothing better. But you are in Heaven now. Welcome, my good and faithful servant."
Stacy Claflin
Stacy Claflin is a USA Today bestselling author and a lifelong storyteller. When she was a child, she would get into trouble for trying to convince others that her stories were real. She scarred her younger cousin for life with her Cavity Monster tale. Another time, she convinced her friends that her grandfather had made her a robotic unicorn.
Now she saves her creative imagination for novels. Whether Stacy's writing urban fantasy, suspense, or contemporary romance, she always has thrills, twists, and turns.  You can count on surprises and an enjoyable escape.
Tamie Dearen
Tamie lives with her very romantic husband of thirty-three years. They have two grown daughters (the inspiration for the daughters in The Best Girls Series) and one grandson, and a twelve-year-old boy, recently adopted from Ukraine. Tamie loves to play, sing, and write music. She started writing books in 2013 and published her first book in October of that year. Since then, she’s published six novels and a novella. She also wrote a free serial romance on her weekly blog, A Rose in Bloom. And in her spare time, she’s a dentist. (But she’s painless.)
Tamie met her husband as a freshman in college when she acted out of character on a whim. One night in the library lobby, she spied a cute guy with his first name written on the back of his shirt. She called out his name. When he approached to talk to her, she pretended that she’d met him before, asking about his classes and how he liked college. To her surprise and delight, he also pretended that he knew her, but of course he didn’t know her name. They continued this false relationship for two months. Each time they saw each other, an event which occurred three times per week at the cafeteria, he would pretend he knew her. Meanwhile, all of Tamie’s friends were careful not to reveal her name to him. When he finally admitted his ignorance of her name, he was astonished to learn the truth. And the rest is history.
J.J. DiBenedetto
J.J. DiBenedetto is author of the Dream Series and the Jane Barnaby Adventures and lives in Arlington, Virginia with the love of his life and a white cat who rules the roost. His passions are photography, travel, the opera, the New York Giants, and of course writing.
Mr. DiBenedetto is devoted to writing books with a sense of mysticism to entertain and perhaps invite his readers to suspend belief in a way they might never have.
Since he was very young, he has always been intrigued with the supernatural and things that can't be explained rationally. By always asking way too many questions, it piqued his interest to the point of setting his writing off and running when he grew up! All the curiosity building up all those years was finally put into words to captivate readers. And it hasn't ended. His main goal is to share all the stories he has inside, putting pen to paper. And that's how the Dream Series was born.
Jessica L. Elliott
For as long as she can remember, Jessica L. Elliott has been telling stories. As soon as she could grasp a pencil she began writing those stories down. Reading fueled her imagination, as did spending time with her five younger brothers and sisters. Everything was an adventure, something to be treasured and stories were her first love. Jessica began seriously writing in high school and continued into college while attending Emporia State University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She wrote and released her first novel, Charming Academy, in August of 2011. Jessica currently lives in southwest Kansas with her husband and children.
